Working With Boycott

After Ego Trip had to pull out of doing are pre recorded band slot for are TV Studio part of the module, there was no better band to replace them than my good friends Dom, Arthur and Daz of Boycott The Baptist.

It was easy getting the band to do it under the idea that they would have a cool music video out of it at the end of it all so on April the 19th they came into the studio and we recorded two of there new songs off their upcoming album.

Setting up

On Monday and Tuesday the crew set up ready for the band. I took control setting up the drum kit as a drummer, as well as bringing all over props we would need into the studio. We opted to use metal sheets from the Warehouse as well as an old metal netting post we found outside to give a murky industrial metal feeling to the set, this perfectly complimented the music Boycott played on the day.

Working on the Day

Recording the band went down very well, we took 4 takes of the first song at different angles, one wide, one medium close and one close up of each member, as well as an extra take of close ups of the instruments themselves, fretboards and all.

On the day we had Cameron and Tyler on cameras, Leon floor managing, Finlay and Chloe on VM and I was in the gallery and in the studio simultaneously Producing the visual part of the music.

The band loved being in the TV studio and had a blast recording to click tracks and pre recorded music, supplied by the drummer Dominic Smith who is also a sound engineer and owns Wreck Studios at Denton Holme in Carlisle.

Paperwork

As this was a professional recording and working environment, I had the band sign Contributor release forms which can be seen below.

Critical Evaluation

Although I think recording the band went superbly, there was still room for improvement. For one I think we could have utilised lighting a lot more on the day, especially maybe adding effects like strobe lights to the mix, this would have give a more music videoesq vibe and would have added to the overall quality of the show itself.

As well as this I think i could have been slightly more organised as recording on Wednesday meant rushing through setting up on Monday and Tuesday, as although we would have preferred a full live performance, due to time constraints, we could only do a click track recording.

However, overall I think overall Wednesday went way better than anyone expected, and the band and the crew left at the end of the day with big smiles on their faces.
