For are television studio production section of this module we decided to go towards the likes of a cultural programme that would specialise in highlighting the different arts of Carlisle and the surrounding areas of Cumbria. On this level, the show greatly succeeded, and with all three main arts, fine arts, film and music being covered, it made for a varied twenty-minute piece that caters to fans of all different arts.
At the start of production, finding suitable guests varied in difficulty. We hired Eddie Stilmank as presenter from the start and he was always happy to help, we also hired Wendy J Thomas as a guest for her work in fine arts almost immediately and she was the only remaining guest that didn’t have to be changed at some point.
We had Ego Trip lined to be the band from the start but after some difficulties we had to drop them, and I got my friend Dom Smiths band ‘Boycott the Baptist’ to do the show.
The film spot was always going to be taken up by one of the university film and tv groups and in the end Hatte Vickerson came in to talk about there short film project.
Filming the show went relatively well however due to the band having to come to record early we lost time to make a better set, but there were no major technical difficulties while recording the show.
Editing took place over two weeks and Myself, Chloe and Finlay all chipped in together in the final project, Chloe taking up editing the opening song from the band, me the end song and Finlay and Chloe put the non-music segments together, as well as the Intro and Credits.
Overall, the overall production of the TV show was much smoother than any of the crew expected, however there was still major problems during production which need to be discussed.
On my end the biggest thing I struggled with in the production was the fact that I was producer. I have never taken a role as big in the film industry before and it showed. I felt stressed a lot of the time especially having to organise my crew and search for guests and do all the paperwork and my inexperience showed, It took me until the last week before the shoot to confirm Boycott the Baptist and Hatte Vickerson which didn’t help with making a shooting schedule, and the time I slotted the band for recording within are time slot was too early and cost the quality of the production, specifically lighting for the band itself.
As well as this I took up too much role within the crew and occasionally forgot about the roles of other people, constantly running around doing jobs that could have been done by someone else, culminating in exhaustion and added anxiety, ultimately leading to attendance issues, especially on the Friday shoot, in which I had to go home due to illness that could have been avoided.
What I should have done myself to improve not only my own quality of work but the people around me would be to research more into Producing and TV itself, to enlighten me how Producing a Game Show/Interview based show works better, and shaping the way I produced the show around the usual formula. This could have minimized my stress levels and further smoothened the full experience.
I also need to rethink what role I would like in the film industry in some ways as when I was given the role of Producer I was very excited to be able to say I produced my own show, but I have now realized just how hard work and stressful it can be it isn’t something I would beg to do again anytime soon.
However, producing ‘A Different Angle’ was overall a fun and inciting experience that put my skills to the test in various ways, and at the end we have come out with a TV show all the crew can say they are proud of.
